What is Hamas? Explained

Since the escalation began between Hamas and Isreal, Hamas, a militant organization became the headline, and the majority of people are not familiar with Hamas, many questions arise about the organization, what's their role in Palestine? and What's the history of this organization? Is it a political party? Let's answered these questions.


What is Hamas?

حركة المقاومة الاسلامية, or Hamas in short, is a Palestinian Sunni-Islamic militant organization. It has a social service wing, Dawah, and a military wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades. It has a strong presence in the Gaza strip to the West of Israel. 

Precise History of Hamas?

Hamas was founded in 1987 right after the break out of the first intifada, uproar, and protest fragmented against the Israeli occupation in Gaza. In 1987, the founder of the organization, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, revealed that Hamas was founded to liberate Palestine from the illegal occupation of Israel.
Since 1994, the group has frequently stated that it would accept the armistice if Israel withdraws to the 1967 borders paid reparations, allowed to conduct free elections in the territories, and the right given to Palestinian refugees.
In January 2006 Palestinian parliamentary elections, Hamas won a majority in the Palestinian Parliament, defeating the PLO-affiliated Fatah party. Hamas and Isreal have since engaged in several conflicts, wars, skirmishes with varying intensity.

Does Hamas have International support?

After the Palestinian Legislative Election in 2006, Hamas emerged as a major power in the Gaza strip which aimed to Liberate Palestine from the Israeli occupation, the condition was imposed on Hamas by the global powers to recognized Isreal as a State and of non-violence approach, but, Hamas refused to accept which leads them to cut off foreign assistance program from the UN, US, Russia, and European Union.   
The supportive countries include the list of  Iran, Syria, Qatar, and Turkey, which are renowned. 
 

Does the World's power consider Hamas a terrorist organization?

Countries like Canada, Israel, Japan, United States, or the EU classify Hamas as a terrorist organization. On the other hand, Australia, New Zealand, Paraguay, and the United Kingdom consider only its military wing as a terrorist organization.

Brazil, China, Egypt, Iran, Norway, Qatar, Russia, Syria, and Turkey, are those countries that are not considered Hamas a terrorist organization. In December 2018, the UN General Assembly rejected a US resolution condemning Hamas as a terrorist organization.
