India-Pakistan I Cold Start Doctrine

Why India's devastating situation of Covid-19 is a matter of global concern?

The year 2021 began with a victory against the novel coronavirus as India claim earlier, considered itself to be in the endgame of the pandemic - though experts warned against the threat. But now the situation is so horrifying, where oxygen crisis killed not the virus, shortage of beds in the hospital lead the people dying on the streets, where each new day cases surpassed the previous day record - weekly positive cases average counted to more than 350,000, the biggest total recorded in a single day globally since the pandemic began.

Just understand through the graph that how it goes straight and is predicted to be high in upcoming days.

According to Mukherjee, a biostatistician and epidemiologist at the University of Michigan who monitors the situation in India told sources. Others warn that it could get as high as 5,500. Though the projection varies, the conclusion is largely the same. "All the arrows are pointing to real darkness," Mukherjee said in a statement.

India's triple mutant Covid variant:

In the mid of April, reportedly India's homegrown variant of the virus has spread to 18 countries, labeled as B.1.617, lead to a matter of concern among health administrators and scientists all across the world. Resulted, several countries banned the flight from India, and most recently Biden administration did.

According to the GISIAD record, the B.1.617 variant was first detected in Maharashtra in October. The variant initially reported the comprise of two mutation - E484Q and L452R - and referred to as the "double mutant" variant. But now scientists convinced that the variant consists of more mutations: E154K, P681R, and Q1071H.

What has made scientists worrying is the presence of three mutations in B.1.617: E484Q, L452R, and P6814 - that would be the reason behind referring to it as a "triple mutant" variant. Similar mutations have found in other "variants of concern", a term currently being used for the variants from UK, South Africa, and Brazil.

  • E484Q mutation is quite similar to E484K that was previously seen in the fast-spreading South African and Brazilian variants.
  • The L452R, this variant was first reported in California.
  • The P681R mutation is alike to the mutation seen in the highly infectious UK variant.

From the World's largest Vaccine Producer to Covid-19 surge:

India's outbreak is a mammoth tragedy for its own people and emerged as a catastrophic crisis for the rest of the world. Ninety-two developing states rely on India, for the doses to protect their own people, a supply now limits by India's domestic obligations.

The situation is so severe that the Pune-based Serum Institute, the manufacturer of vaccine AstraZeneca and amongst the major contributor to COVAX initiative (protecting people against Covid-19 regardless of wealth) to provide doses to developing countries, but now it isn't able to meet its international commitments in the thick of India's domestic shortage. Once India is supposed to be the pharmacy of the world but now is forced to import doses from the world.

The country has the potential to manufacture 70 million doses a month, but due to the emergency need of the doses to domestic requirements, they're not enough to meet the immense demand. Now, India is administering around 3 million doses a day. To protect its vast population of 1.4 billion, Mukherjee said the number would need to increase threefold.
