India-Pakistan I Cold Start Doctrine

Cyber Security Types

Cybersecurity is a parent domain or we can say as a top of a hierarchy. Broadly speaking cybersecurity further divide into six different domains or types. Each type requires specialized skills and hence provide a unique career path:

  1.  Industrial Control Systems Cybersecurity – ICS
  2.  Critical Infrastructure Security
  3.  Application Security
  4.  Network Security
  5.  Cloud Security
  6.  Internet of Things (IoT) Security

Industrial Control Systems (ICS) & Critical Infrastructure Security:

Industrial Control Systems (ICS) security is a specialized domain of Critical Infrastructure security. Critical Infrastructure security deals with all the vital infrastructure that a government or nation relies on – consist of cyber-physical systems that are crucial for modern society.

Common examples are:

·         Hospitals

·         Traffic Controls

·         Electricity grid

·         Nuclear Plant

Industrial Control System - Operating Technology and Skada System are the components of Crucial Infrastructure security. Whereas, when we say ICS we referred to the complex industrial processes that deliver power, water, transportation, manufacturing, and other essential services.

Application Security:

Application Security refers to the steps Businesses take to identify, repair, and protect an application against security vulnerabilities. The main objective is to secure the application by finding, fixing, and enhancing the bugs or enhancing the security of the apps.

Much of this happens during the developing phase, however, it includes tools and methods to protect apps once they are deployed in the wild.

Network Security:

Network Security utilizes various tools and techniques to protect the network from cyber-attacks. It ensures that internal networks are secure by protecting the infrastructure and inhabiting access to it.

For example, Network Security engineers used access control like Firewalls, monitoring and detection systems like IDS & IPS to safeguard the network.

In order to differentiate both the terms - Application Security deals with finding the software level bugs in a particular app or software or maybe in a website, whereas, Network Security considers implementing the network security components and monetary systems to safeguard the network from unauthorized access internally or externally.

Cloud Security:

Cloud Security deals with policies, techniques, and procedures to keep the cloud environment secure. It secures cloud-stored data and other digital assets against data breaches, malware, DDOS attack, hacking, and other cyber-security threats.

IoT Security:

IoT safeguards the internet of thing devices and the network such as censors, printers, security, cameras, or more. IoT devices are being targeted by hackers and are being used as points of entry into organizations or homes.
